It is the question we get asked most, usually with a laptop on the counter and a worried look. The honest answer is that most machines under about six years old are worth fixing, and plenty of older ones are too. Here is how we decide, so you can make the call yourself before you spend anything.
The two questions that decide it
1. What is actually wrong? A slow, cluttered Windows install, a dying hard drive, a clogged fan or a flat laptop battery are all cheap, quick fixes that make the machine feel new. A cracked motherboard, liquid damage or a failed graphics chip on a laptop are not, because the part costs nearly as much as a replacement.
2. What was the machine like when it was good? If it did everything you needed two years ago, a repair gets you back to that for a fraction of the price of a new one. If it was already struggling with the programs you use, repairing it only buys time.
Repairs that are almost always worth it
- Replacing an old spinning hard drive with an SSD. This is the single biggest upgrade you can make. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds, and everything opens faster. We move your files, programs and settings across so nothing changes except the speed.
- Adding memory. If you have 4 GB of RAM and twenty browser tabs, the machine is swapping to disk constantly. Going to 8 or 16 GB fixes it.
- A clean-out and thermal service. Dust and dried thermal paste make laptops run hot, throttle and shut down. A service takes under an hour.
- A new battery or charger. Cheap, and it is often the only thing wrong.
- Cracked laptop screens. For most mainstream laptops a screen is a routine part. We will tell you the price before ordering.
When we will tell you to replace it instead
- The motherboard has failed and the machine is more than a few years old.
- Liquid has gone through it. Even when it still works, corrosion keeps spreading.
- It cannot run a supported version of Windows. Windows 10 stopped getting security updates in October 2025, and a machine that cannot move to Windows 11 is a risk online.
- The repair would cost more than about half of a sensible replacement.
When replacement is the right call, we will say so and help you pick something that fits, whether that is a refurbished business laptop, a new machine, or a custom build. We also move your data across and wipe the old one properly.
What it costs to find out
We start with free remote triage: a quick look over a screen-share, or a few questions on the phone. Many problems never need to come into the workshop. If it does, you get a diagnosis and a written quote before any work starts, and the quote is the price.
